Felicitation Ceremony to Honor the Founder Instructor of College of Education

TU-PNC, 1 Jan. 2018 – A felicitation ceremony was organized on 1 January 2018 to honor Prof. Sarbagyabhakta Malla. The ceremony was chaired by Campus Chief Prof. Dr. Chandra Bahadur Thapa and attended by Prof. Malla as chief guest.

Prof. Malla was the founder instructor of the College of Eduction (COE) at then Prithvi Narayan College who got his first appointment on 22 August 1960 (7 Bhadra 2017 BS). He was the senior instructor in the Normal School for 2 years, which was the teacher training center under the COE that was established in 1956. After four years of the establishment of the COE, Prithvi Narayan Inter-College was founded on 1 September 1960, starting with 2 teachers and 13 students in Nadipur. George John was the first Principal of the inter-college.   

In 1963, Prof. Malla again came back to Pokhara from Kathmandu and served as Head of the Primary Teacher Training Center (PTTC) for 6 years. During his second term in Pokhara, he build COE building, staff quarters and students’ hostels in financial collaboration of the then Nepal Government and the USA. He also ran laboratory school in Pokhara to provide practical training for his interns. Interestingly, he used to bring rice from Kathmandu in order to feed his staff and students.  

Unfolding the history of Prithvi Narayan Campus, Prof. Malla felt regret and showed his dissatisfaction over his unfulfilled dreams of making Tribhuvan University as a good university. He blamed the university teachers for involving in politics rather than engaging in academic activities. He also suggested that university teachers should give more attention towards quality than quantity of education.   

Prof. Malla is now 83 and has also served as Dean of the Faculty of Education at Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur. He also handed over a few copies of his own life story to the Western Regional Library and distributed specimen copies to the participants at the ceremony.

Speaking as the chairperson, Campus Chief Thapa praised Prof. Malla for his contribution to the establishment and development of the campus. He said that we should not forget the history and should not ignore those who have contributed to the development of the campus.  

Prof. Malla was facilitated by Assistant Campus Chief Prof. Tara Khanal, Assistant Campus Chief Upendra Poudel, Assistant Campus Chief Basanta Parajuli, Coordinator Chola Kanta Ojha and Dept Head Prof. Tirtha Aryal.

Welcome speech was delivered by Assistant Campus Chief Hom Nath Poudel and the program was hosted by Shree Krishna Panthee.
